Slovenia Recognizes Independent Palestinian State

Slovenia’s government approved a decision on Thursday to recognize an independent Palestinian state, Prime Minister Robert Golob announced at a news conference today.

This diplomatic move aligns Slovenia with Spain, Ireland, and Norway, who recently recognized the State of Palestine.

It is part of international efforts and moves made to increase pressure on Israel to halt its military operations in Rafah and end the ongoing war in Gaza.

Slovenia’s decision was submitted to the Slovenian Parliament, and they wait for the formal approval in the coming days, according to Reuters.

“Today the government has decided to recognize Palestine as an independent and sovereign state,” Golob said at a news conference in Ljubljana.

Furthermore, the Slovenian government raised a Palestinian flag alongside the flags of Slovenia and the EU in front of its building in downtown Ljubljana. “This is the message of peace,” Golob stated.

Spain, Ireland and Norway Recognition

On May 28, Spain, Ireland and Norway officially recognized a Palestinian state after Israel’s airstrike on a camp for displaced Palestinians in Rafah that killed at least 45 people and wounded 200 others.

The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that this recognition is a historic step paving the way to achieve peace and two-state solution.

The Irish Government has raised the Palestinian flag outside Leinster House, Irish Parliament’s headquarters, marking the formal recognition of the State of Palestine.

“I hope it sends the Palestinian people a message of hope that in this, their darkest hour, Ireland stands with them,” said the Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris.

Britain and Australia said they are also considering recognition, but France said now is not the time, reported Reuters.
