Saudi Arabia, UK Forge Int’l Partnership to Boost Yemen’s Maritime Security

Riyadh on Tuesday hosted a high-level conference with the United Kingdom and over 35 countries to launch the Yemen Maritime Security Partnership. The initiative aims to strengthen security in Yemen’s waterways, combat threats, and ensure safe navigation for global trade.

Furthermore, the conference secured millions of dollars in initial funding to rebuild the Yemeni Coast Guard’s civil capacities. The funds will cover training, new equipment, and institutional support within a comprehensive ten-year maritime security strategy.

Consequently, the partnership prioritizes fighting smuggling, piracy, and human trafficking in Yemen’s vital waterways. These efforts will protect international trade routes and enhance regional stability across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Saudi Arabia’s continued support for Yemen

Saudi Ambassador to Yemen Mohammed Al Jaber stressed the Red Sea’s strategic importance for regional and global trade, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s commitment to protecting navigation routes and maintaining maritime safety as a global priority. He confirmed Riyadh’s efforts to strengthen Yemen’s political, economic, and humanitarian resilience. He noted that Saudi Arabia has provided decades of support, including 265 development projects worth $55.6 million through the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen.

The ambassador announced an additional $4 million contribution to strengthen the Yemeni Coast Guard. This support will enhance its role in combating organized crime, illegal migration, and maritime threats while securing vital global trade routes.

UK affirms commitment

Additionally, UK Ambassador to Yemen Abda Sharif emphasized Britain’s commitment to supporting both the Yemeni Coast Guard and government. She noted that the new pledges reflect strong international support and expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia for its leadership.

The partnership will establish a dedicated secretariat managed through the Technical Assistance Fund for Yemen (TAFFY). The body will coordinate international contributions and ensure resources reach targeted projects efficiently, strengthening cooperation between partners.

Support for the Yemeni Coast Guard will bolster maritime security, create economic opportunities for coastal communities, and safeguard one of the world’s most crucial waterways.
