Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step towards addressing global water challenges by establishing the International Water Research Center in partnership with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture Eng. Abdulrahman Al-Fadley announced the initiative during a high-level dialogue session.
The session, titled “Sustainable Water Management in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions for Drought and Land Resilience,” was part of UNCCD COP16. This announcement aligns with Sustainability Innovation Week and addresses global water challenges.
Aiming for Global Leadership in Water Research
The center will become a global platform for applied research in water economics, security, pollution, and digital monitoring technologies. It seeks to achieve significant progress in addressing international water issues and uniting experts worldwide.
The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture stated that the center focuses on developing solutions to water scarcity and pollution challenges. It will also enhance research and apply advanced technologies to ensure sustainable water resources for all generations.
Enhancing Global Cooperation and Developing Advanced Tech
Located at KAUST, the center will collaborate with leading research entities nationally and globally. It will benefit from the university’s academic expertise and advanced facilities in water research.
The center aspires to provide innovative solutions, strengthening Saudi Arabia’s leadership in water sustainability and global competitiveness. Research will target water economics, pollution treatment, advanced monitoring tools, and policies for arid regions.
Pioneering Innovations for Sustainable Development
The ministry emphasized that the center focuses on developing modern technologies to enhance water management and quality. It will also support decision-making through digital tools and innovations in water production and treatment methods.
By addressing these critical challenges, the center reinforces Saudi Arabia’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental resilience.
