He argues that the United States and Israel are not genuinely pursuing peace but are instead participating in a campaign of ethnic cleansing. Furthermore, Mearsheimer asserts, “Here in the United States and in the West more generally, we pretend that Israel is serious about negotiating some sort of deal to put an end to the war in Gaza, but that’s not what’s going on here.”
Consequently, Mearsheimer contends that Israel’s actions aim to ensure that there is no ceasefire or peace agreement involving Gaza. He states, “What the Israelis are bent on doing is making sure there is no ceasefire, and there’s certainly no peace agreement involving Gaza, because they want to ethnically cleanse Gaza.” He emphasizes that this strategy is part of a broader plan to “raise Gaza City, which they’re now starting to do.”

US Involvement and Approval
The political scientist raises serious questions about US involvement in the conflict. He suggests that the United States must have given Israel the green light for its military actions. “It’s hard to believe that the United States didn’t give them the green light in the sense that the United States knew that this was coming and said it’s okay to do it,” Mearsheimer argues. He believes that the US had prior knowledge of Israel’s military movements, stating, “There’s no way, in my opinion, that they could have flown into Qatar, given that we have a huge air base there and all sorts of surveillance capabilities.”
Complicity in Genocide
Mearsheimer does not shy away from using strong language to describe the situation, claiming, “The Trump administration is in cahoots with the Israelis. This is a tag team. They’re executing a genocide in Gaza.” He insists that the US administration is fully complicit in these actions, stating, “The Trump administration is fully complicit in that. Genocide.”
Mearsheimer expresses skepticism about the possibility of negotiating with the US or Israel. He states, “If I were in charge of any particular country or group out there, I would not negotiate in good faith with the United States or with Israel.” He has consistently argued that the United States is untrustworthy, saying, “You cannot trust the United States.”
