KSA, Kuwait Call for Respecting Navigation in Red Sea

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait confirmed today, Wednesday, the importance of preserving the security and stability of the Red Sea region and respecting the right to maritime navigation in it. They are calling for respecting navigation in Red Sea  “to safeguard the interests of the entire world.”

This was stated in a joint statement issued at the conclusion of Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah’s visit to Saudi Arabia.

Both sides called for restraint and avoidance of escalation in light of current events in the region.

The statement, published by the Saudi Press Agency, emphasized the Kingdom and Kuwait’s commitment to enhancing defense cooperation. These partnerships would protect the security and stability of both countries and the region.

What is Happening in the Red Sea?

 

The Houthi militias in Yemen started to attack Israel-related ships passing through the Red Sea. They claim that these attacks are response to Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip.

These attacks have been a blow to global trade. Avoiding sailing close to the Houthi wind in the red sea, ships started to take different routes.

Iraq’s Commitment to Sovereignty of Kuwait

The two sides stressed the importance of the Republic of Iraq’s commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the State of Kuwait, reported Al Arabiya.

They also affirmed that Iraq must respect bilateral and international pledges and agreements and  especially Security Council Resolution No. 833 (1993).

According to this resolution, the land and sea borders between Kuwait and Iraq were demarcated. They stressed the importance of completing the demarcation of the borders between the two countries after the nautical mark 162.

Durra field

Moreover, KSA and Kuwait affirmed a statement in which they affirmed that the entire Durra field is located in Kuwait’s marine areas.

They also affirmed that both KSA and Kuwait own the natural resources in the divided submerged area, including the entire Durra field. Only KSA and Kuwait have full rights to use the resources in this region.

They affirmed their complete rejection of any claims that any other party has a right in this field or the divided submerged area.

Crisis in Gaza

They discussed their deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the ferocious war. The war has left thousands of unarmed civilians killed and infrastructure, places of worship and building devastated.

They stressed the importance of halting military operations in Gaza and protecting civilians.

Furthermore, they highlighted the important role of international community to put an end to the Israeli violations. The two countries stated that the international community has to pressure Israel to stop the aggression and prevent the forced displacement of the Palestinians.

They also stressed the importance of allowing the international humanitarian organizations, including the United Nations, to provide aid and relief to the Palestinian people.
