King Salman Congratulates Sri Lankan President on National Day

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, congratulated President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe on the occasion of his country’s National Day.
King Salman expressed his sincerest congratulations and best wishes for health and happiness to the president, and for the continued progress and prosperity of the government and people of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia have witnessed rapid economic growth and diversification, especially with the ambitious Vision 2030 initiative.
Enhancing Bilateral Economic Relations
Faisal Bin Fazil Al Ibrahim’s visit to Sri Lanka last year significantly marked a key move in strengthening economic ties.
He engaged in discussions about mutual economic growth with Sri Lankan leaders, importantly guided by Saudi Ambassador Khalid bin Hamood Al Qahtani.
Furthermore, Saudi Arabia aids developing countries, notably through significant financial support to Sri Lanka. This support includes interest-free loans and humanitarian aid.
Consequently, this partnership offers Sri Lanka an advantageous opportunity to utilize Saudi Arabia’s economic strength.
Republic of Sri Lanka’s Economy
Colombo, the financial heart of Sri Lanka, anchors an economy classified as a developing, lower-middle income one. The nation’s GDP per capita stands at $3,293 nominally, and $14,230 in purchasing power parity (PPP) as of 2022.
Sri Lanka’s economy experienced a fluctuating GDP growth, with a notable decline of 8.7% in FY2022-23. The economy is segmented into agriculture (14.6%), industry (26.2%), and services (59.2%).
Services, including ports and airports, significantly boost Sri Lanka’s economy. Colombo is a key transshipment hub in South Asia.
In 2021, Sri Lanka’s economy suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to debt and instability. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s government has launched projects like the Western Region Megapolis to spur growth and diversify the economy.
The meeting between Sri Lanka’s government and Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Economy and Planning was a positive step for economic and trade relations.
This collaboration could be crucial for Sri Lanka’s recovery and growth, leveraging Saudi Arabia’s global economic influence.
