Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal Sign Cancelo in €25 Million Deal from Manchester City
Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal have signed Joao Cancelo from Manchester City in a deal worth €25 million.
The Portuguese full-back, once a key player at the Etihad, joins Al Hilal after Manchester City deemed him surplus to requirements.
Cancelo’s Journey to Saudi Arabia
Cancelo’s departure from Manchester City was anticipated after his relationship with manager Pep Guardiola deteriorated during the 2022/23 season.
The 30-year-old spent the last season and a half on loan at Bayern Munich and Barcelona, but City sought a permanent transfer during the current window.

Barcelona expressed interest in re-signing Cancelo, but financial constraints made the deal challenging. With the transfer window closing soon, Cancelo opted for a move to the Saudi Pro League, leaving behind his preferred destination of La Liga. Manchester City confirmed his transfer on Tuesday, with Cancelo expressing gratitude to the club and its supporters.
A Strategic Addition for Al Hilal
Cancelo completed his medical in Paris before officially signing with Al Hilal, where he will strengthen the squad under manager Jorge Jesus. The versatile full-back, capable of playing on both flanks, was Jesus’s top choice to reinforce the right-back position. His arrival has allowed Saud Abdulhamid to move to AS Roma.
This signing marks a significant coup for Al Hilal, who are not only aiming to defend their Saudi Pro League title but also preparing for the AFC Asian Champions League and the 2025 Club World Cup. Cancelo’s experience and versatility will be crucial as the Riyadh giants continue to build a formidable squad.
A New Chapter in Cancelo’s Career
Reflecting on his time at Manchester City, Cancelo said, “I had many special moments at this great club. I would like to thank my teammates, the coaches, all the staff, and the fans for everything.” Now, he embarks on a new challenge with Al Hilal, as they aim to make their mark on both domestic and international stages.
