Saudi Arabia will transform over four thousand factories into smart, AI-enabled facilities, marking a major milestone in the nation’s industrial evolution under Vision 2030. Crucially, the Kingdom announced this initiative during the third annual Saudi Forum for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), where officials defined its strategy for global leadership in advanced manufacturing and innovation.
The Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Saudi Arabia (C4IR Saudi Arabia), the World Economic Forum, and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) organized the successful forum, bringing together ministers, industry leaders, and global experts to effectively chart the Kingdom’s next phase of industrial growth.
During the panel “Industrial Leadership in the Era of Convergence,” Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Alkhorayef announced a strategic shift in industrial policy. Alkhorayef stressed that the focus has successfully moved from simply keeping pace with global developments toward actively driving the establishment of future industries within the Kingdom.
Driving Smart Manufacturing
The Kingdom is successfully realizing this comprehensive transformation by upgrading more than four thousand factories into smart industrial facilities powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), automation, and 3D printing. Furthermore, the discussion, moderated by Dr. Basma AlBuhairan, underscored how the Kingdom’s industrial leadership actively embeds technology, innovation, and sustainability into its entire economic growth framework.
Consequently, Alkhorayef added that the Ministry actively builds new industrial capabilities for emerging technologies while it simultaneously develops vital digital infrastructure and cultivates essential national talent. Moreover, these efforts strengthen regulatory frameworks, successfully attracting increased investment and ensuring the safe, effective adoption of advanced technologies nationwide.
Global Best Practices and Knowledge Capital
The forum effectively featured twelve engaging panel discussions addressing both global best practices and local opportunities within the Fourth Industrial Revolution ecosystem. Specifically, key topics included the seamless integration of drones, satellites, and AI, the rapid evolution of smart factories and digital twins, and the potential of quantum technologies to effectively reinforce cybersecurity and global trust.
Experts also explored the KACST Advanced Manufacturing Centre through an interactive metaverse experience led by Dr. Ibrahim AlShunaifi, an expert researcher and project leader at KACST. The specialized session showcased additive and subtractive manufacturing and smart logistics, clearly highlighting Saudi Arabia’s robust and rapidly growing ecosystem for advanced production.
Indeed, forum speakers emphasized the critical global transition from physical capital toward knowledge capital, identifying mental well-being and continuous learning as future pillars of national competitiveness. They further highlighted the pivotal role that youth and tech entrepreneurs play in successfully shaping the current AI era. Speakers noted that investment in people, not solely technology, remains the fundamental and true driver of all future industries within the Kingdom.
Accelerating SME Transformation
Meanwhile, officials effectively launched the PeerLink digital platform on the forum sidelines to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) share critical knowledge and accelerate industrial transformation. Simultaneously, officials successfully released three significant joint publications with the influential World Economic Forum, supporting broader global collaboration. These publications covered Advanced Air Mobility, peer-to-peer learning for SMEs, and the impact of the 4IR Centers.
Ultimately, these comprehensive initiatives reinforce Saudi Arabia’s growing influence as a decisive regional and global hub for industrial innovation, strongly aligning with its ambitious Vision 2030 goal to build a fully sustainable, technology-driven economy.
