Iran Will Overcome any Reimposed UN Sanctions: President

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Saturday that his country would overcome any reimposed sanctions under the “snapback” mechanism, following the UN Security Council’s vote not to permanently lift restrictions on Tehran, according to Reuters.

“Through the ‘snapback’ they block the road, but it is the brains and the thoughts that open or build the road,” Pezeshkian said.

Security Council Decision

On Friday, the UN Security Council decided not to permanently lift restrictions on Iran after the three European powers, Britain, France, and Germany triggered a 30-day process in August to reimpose sanctions.

This was driven by an accusation that Tehran had violated the 2015 nuclear agreement signed to curb its ability to develop nuclear weapons.

“They cannot stop us. They can strike our Natanz or Fordow (nuclear installations attacked by the US and Israel in June), but they are unaware that it is humans who built and will rebuild Natanz,” Pezeshkian said.

Iran has been persisting that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

“We will never surrender in the face of excessive demands because we have the power to change the situation,” the president added.

Snapback Mechanism

According to the “snapback” mechanism, European powers would reimpose UN sanctions on Tehran unless they reach an agreement with Iran to postpone the step within about a week.

In July, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told his European counterparts on Friday that they have no moral or legal grounds for reactivating UN sanctions.

“If EU/E3 want to have a role, they should act responsibly and put aside the worn-out policies of threat and pressure, including the ‘snap-back’ for which they (have) absolutely no moral (or) legal grounds,” Araghchi said on X.

He also noted Tehran is ready for a new round of talks if the other side is willing to reach “a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial nuclear deal.”
