Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s demand for the death penalty for “terrorists” passed a first reading in Israel’s parliament on Monday, according to Al-Arabiya.
The bill has secured 39 votes and now waits for a second and third reading before turning into a law that could apply to Palestinians accused of deadly attacks against Israelis.
In October, Ben Gvir shared a video of himself standing over a line of Palestinian detainees lying face down with their hands bound, as he urged for imposing the “death penalty for terrorists.”
He has also threatened to withdraw his support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition if his bill suggesting “the death penalty for terrorists” is not brought to a parliamentary vote by November 9.
The Israeli Security Committee noted that the decision seeks to eliminate terrorism from its roots through a heavy deterrent.
In response, the Palestinian group Hamas stated that the proposed bill depicts the ugly fascist face of the Zionist and “represents a blatant violation of international law.”
The far-right minister claimed that Hamas tortured the hostages” held in Gaza after Israel murdered senior Hamas leaders.
“I am proud of the revolution in the prisons, unlike anything since the founding of the state; today, instead of a summer camp, there is deterrence. There are no more smiles there – we erase them,” he wrote.
Then, he openly boasted about the harsh detention conditions he has enforced on Palestinian prisoners.
“Ask any terrorist who passed through my prison, if he would like to return there – they are afraid, trembling, and the number of attacks has fallen remarkably,” he added.
