Green Riyadh Program begins afforestation of residential neighborhoods, starting with Azizia
The “Green Riyadh” program announced the commencement of afforestation works in residential neighborhoods aimed at increasing green spaces in the city.
The “Green Riyadh” program is one of the four major Riyadh projects launched by King Salman.
The program’s goal is to reforest more than 120 residential neighborhoods. The designs for the reforestation effort were created using worldwide standards while considering the local environment.
The program calls for the installation of gardens in residential neighborhoods. In addition, the planting of internal arteries. The construction of pedestrian paths and woodland walkways. The planting of mosques and schools.
Extensive gardens will also be implemented, car parking lots will be afforested, and valleys and their tributaries will be afforested in Riyadh.
Landscaping work will begin in the Al-Azizia neighborhood on December 29, 2022, and will witness the planting of 623,000 trees and shrubs, and 54 gardens.
It also includes the afforestation of 61 schools, 121 mosques, and 78 car parking sites, in addition to the neighborhood’s 176 km of roads and paths.
Before afforestation in residential neighborhoods begins, an event is held to educate residents about the program. This event aims to introduce them to the project’s stages and duration and the accompanying works.
In addition, the event will include a statement of the future vision of the neighborhood after the completion of the afforestation.
The event includes a traveling exhibition on afforestation in residential neighborhoods.
The event is scheduled to start in Al-Azizia on December 29, 2022, to January 7, 2023.
The program then proceeds to the residential neighborhoods whose implementation contracts have been signed: Al-Naseem Al-Sharqi, Al-Jazira, Al-Uraija Al-Wusta, Qurtuba, Al-Ghadeer, and Al-Nakhil.
It is noteworthy that the “Green Riyadh” program contributes to achieving the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative (planting 10 billion trees nationwide).
The Green Riyadh Program aims to plant 7.5 million trees in Riyadh and increase vegetation cover to 9.1% of the city’s area.
Per capita, green space will increase from 1.7 square meters to 28 square meters, equivalent to 16 times what it is now. This will improve the urban environment of the city of Riyadh through afforestation in residential neighborhoods.
With the goal of ensuring the sustainability of green spaces, the program works to set up a network that irrigates green spaces with 100% reclaimed water. It is estimated that this network repurposes one million cubic meters of water every day.
