Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman, discussed with the President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the repercussions of the military escalation in the region, and its effects on security and stability. In a phone call on Tuesday, the two leaders discussed the importance of making efforts to prevent the situation from worsening and to spare the region the dangers of war, reported Al Arabiya.
During the past few days, the region witnessed unprecedented tension and military escalation after Israel pledged to respond to the Iranian attack.
On Saturday evening, Iran launched its first direct attack on Israel using dozens of drones and cruise missiles, after a senior commander in the Revolutionary Guard was killed in an attack believed to be Israeli, targeting the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus last week.
On Saturday morning, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) seized an Israeli-linked container ship, the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries, near the Strait of Hormuz.
Later on Saturday, Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles towards Israel in an immense aerial attack. After reports of the attack, Israel closed its airspace, and so did Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon. By Sunday morning, Israel and Jordan reopened their airspace.
Israel’s war cabinet has been weighing possible retaliation scenarios and Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed a strong response although Israel’s allies has been urging the country not to respond to avoid a wide-scale conflict in the region.
