Award-Winning Artist Admits ‘Not Very Good at Painting’-BBC

Frippy Jameson, who lives and works near Kelso, recently won the Lockbund Award at the Society of Portrait Sculptors’ 60th exhibition. However, Frippy admitted: “I’m not very good at painting or drawing, and I think in schools children often say: ‘I can’t do art.’

Frippy added that the award-winning piece pushed her to her limits, saying, “But sculpture is quite a different way of thinking, and that’s something I’d like to get more involved in – encouraging children and young adults into sculpture.”

She also stressed her delight at being accepted to exhibit her sculpture of a young girl named Flora in Northumberland. She got stunned when she was told that she had beaten well-known artists who were vying for the award.

Art work

“It’s their 60th anniversary and I was thrilled to bits just to be there, as these are the top figurative sculptors in the country,” Frippy said.

“I travelled down to London I received an email saying I’d won the Lockbund Award for the best child portrait in the exhibition.”

She pointed out “It’s quite career-defining. As an artist, you spend a lot of time struggling through other jobs, aiming to reach a point where you can simply sculpt. Furthermore, to be judged by peers and selected for something like this is fantastic.”

The young artist believes the south of Scotland has provided the perfect place for her to enjoy nature and has built a national reputation for life-size sculptures of people and animals.

“This piece, Flora, was a real test of how far I could take my skills and all the knowledge that I’ve gathered,” she said.

Horse sculpture

Frippy, now a full-time sculptor for eight years, believes Scotland could foster more sculptors if kids had the chance to learn art. Moreover, she thinks children who enjoy building with Lego or wood likely possess a sculpting or engineering inclination.

In conclusion, her work will feature at the Inception Art Show in Dalkeith Palace from May 3 to May 12, supporting the My Name’s Doddie Foundation.
