Australia, Indonesia Seal Security Pact Amid Regional Tensions

Australia and Indonesia agreed on Wednesday to sign a new security treaty, enhancing military cooperation between the two nations, following talks between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Sydney. The treaty marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations.

Canberra has increasingly aligned itself with its longtime ally, Washington, as it seeks to deter the rising influence of China in the Asia-Pacific region. In contrast, Jakarta has maintained a more neutral stance, cautious about becoming too close to Washington while avoiding tensions with Beijing.

During the press conference at a Royal Australian Navy Base, Albanese stated, “We have just substantively concluded negotiations on a new bilateral treaty on our common security,” emphasizing that this treaty recognizes the importance of collaboration for peace and stability.

Key Provisions of the Treaty

The new agreement builds on a bilateral defense pact signed in 2024, which aimed to enhance cooperation in the contested Asia-Pacific region. Albanese explained that the treaty commits both countries to consult regularly at leader and ministerial levels on security matters. Additionally, the treaty will facilitate mutually beneficial security activities. If either country’s security is threatened, they will consult and consider appropriate measures, either individually or jointly.

President Prabowo highlighted the importance of close cooperation in defense and security, stating, “We cannot choose our neighbors, especially countries like us. Good neighbors will help each other in times of difficulties.”

Both leaders expressed optimism about the treaty’s potential to foster stability and security in the region. Albanese plans to visit Indonesia next year to formally sign the treaty, further solidifying the partnership between Australia and Indonesia.
