Al-Nassr have launched a bold pursuit of Spanish coaching legend Pep Guardiola, approaching his representative with a financial proposal that could shatter every benchmark in football management history. Spanish sports daily Marca first reported that the Riyadh club, currently reigning Saudi Pro League champions, want Guardiola to take charge next season, potentially placing him in the dugout alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to Marca, Al-Nassr’s financial package could rewrite sporting history, with a proposed salary ranging between $65 million and $95 million per season, a figure designed to elevate Guardiola into the earnings bracket of elite on-field superstars.
Furthermore, separate reports from the Kingdom suggest the offer could reach $150 million annually, making him by a considerable margin the highest-paid coach in football history.
Guardiola’s long-time agent, Josep Maria Orobitg, confirmed the approach to Saudi outlet Okaz, saying, “There was contact a month and a half ago, only contact, with no commitment or written offer.” Significantly, Orobitg clarified that Al-Nassr made their initial approach before Guardiola publicly confirmed his decision to leave Manchester City.
The agent also dismissed the widely circulated €130 million-per-season figure, stating it was not that much money.
The Most Decorated Coach of His Generation
Any club pursuing Guardiola does so with good reason, as the Spaniard ranks among the most decorated managers in football history, winning over 30 trophies across his managerial career. His journey began at Barcelona, where he immediately made history.
In his first season in charge, he led Barcelona to a historic treble, becoming the first Spanish club to achieve that feat. He then completed a record six trophies in the 2009 calendar year alone, adding the Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup, and Club World Cup to his collection. In total, he accumulated 15 trophies with Barcelona, including two Champions League titles in 2009 and 2011.
Guardiola subsequently took his golden touch to Germany. At Bayern Munich, he won the Bundesliga in all three of his seasons, also claiming the German Cup twice, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup. He then moved to England, where he produced perhaps his finest work, delivering 18 major trophies during his time at Manchester City, the greatest era in the club’s 131-year history.
That decade-long spell brought six Premier League titles, multiple domestic cups, and the club’s first Champions League trophy, with City completing a historic treble in 2023. Guardiola is renowned for the possession-based Tiki-taka style he developed at Barcelona, a system that reshaped modern football tactics globally.
Ronaldo, Rivalry and a Dream Reunion in Riyadh
The prospect of Guardiola coaching Ronaldo carries enormous symbolic weight. The two giants of the game famously clashed during the fierce El Clasico rivalry of the Barcelona years, a period Guardiola once marked with the tribute,”Cristiano is a monster… and Messi was the father of that monster. Both have done something incredible over the last 15 or 20 years.”
Al-Nassr are already preparing for the possible departure of current head coach Jorge Jesus. Jesus guided his side to the Saudi Pro League title this season, yet responded candidly when asked about a potential Guardiola succession. “He is the one who should be proud to replace me, not the other way around,” the Portuguese coach said bluntly.
Al-Nassr’s hierarchy also note Guardiola’s recent candid remarks about mental fatigue and the relentless pace of European football, comments the club believes signal his openness to a new challenge entirely.
Saudi Football’s Transformation
The Guardiola approach, however ambitious, reflects the broader scale of Saudi Arabia’s football revolution. The Kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative drove heavy investment into the Saudi Pro League, with the acquisition of high-profile players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar dramatically increasing the league’s global visibility.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund transformed the league further by acquiring major stakes in top clubs and investing heavily in global talent, elevating the league’s appeal and attracting millions of new fans worldwide.
